Security Overview

Following are the types of access security TimeSaver provides:

First, create, name, and grant specific types of access to security groups. Then assign individual users to the group. There are no restrictions on how many groups you can create and how they are named, except for the space limits of the naming fields.

After you are assigned to a group, you can change the types of access given to the group, as long as it is not a security group to which you belong. You cannot grant yourself or others access rights that are higher than those granted to your group.

The security rights set up for you determine the records you can add, display, edit, and delete on TimeSaver pages and reports. On pages with records to which you do not have security access, Not Editable displays above the tabs on the page, and you are not allowed to edit them. On pages for which you have security access to some, but not all records, Restricted Updates displays at the top of the page.

For example, on the Positions tab on the Positions page, for the Position Rate field, hourly rate access security is required. What you are allowed to do depends on the type of rate access you were granted in Security Setup. With update rights, you can enter the rate, and the field remains active so you can change it later. With view-only rights, you can see the rate and enter a rate for a new position. If you do not have view rights, the field is unavailable for your use, except for entering a rate when setting up a new position.

For detailed information about TimeSaver security settings, see the Web Security Functions document on adp4me.adp.com. Select the Product Knowledgebase tab, and then select TLM - Time & Labor Management Division ~ TimeSaver Documentation.

Understanding Membership and Ownership

It is important to understand the difference between security group membership and group ownership. You are assigned membership in a security group selected on the User Information tab in User Setup, and you have all the access rights for that group. You are given ownership of the security groups selected on the Security Groups tab in User Setup. You own the group in which you have membership, but you may also own other security groups with different access rights. The groups you own are the only ones that display when you search for existing groups to modify in Security Setup. You can grant only your membership access permissions to other groups.

Once you are assigned membership in a security group, you cannot change the types of access given to the group and you cannot grant yourself or others more access rights than those of your group.

Using Security Group Templates

You may be able to access the following security group templates if the Allow Security Template Access Process permission has been given to your security group.

The Practitioner, Manager, and Supervisor security groups that ADP created have preset levels of access. The Practitioner security group has the greatest access to TimeSaver data and processes. The Manager group has the next greatest access, and the Supervisor group has the third greatest amount of access.

You cannot edit or delete security group templates. You can only copy them. Copying a security group template is a convenient way to grant as much access as possible without having to complete all the usual setup steps. When you copy one of the three templates, only the permissions that are the same as or less than those of your membership group are automatically granted.
